Summary: The Killer still has it!
Comment: He may be showing his age a bit (--54 hard-living years at the time of this recording--) in this video, but his singing voice remains srong and he still has that thunder in his hands. (I always find it amazing that he is self-taught on the piano.) My personal favorite on the video is "Mexicali Rose", an old Gene Autry song which The Killer has re-invigorated and made his own. That song alone makes the video worth purchasing for me. Sadly, they just don't make 'em like Jerry Lee any more. From the opening song "I Am What I Am" where he asks his drummer to pick up the tempo, to "You Win Again" where he berates his band for not knownig their chords, to the closing flourish on the piano during "Wild One", Jerry Lee Lewis shows why he is a true American original.

Summary: The Killer Returns
Comment: I have attempted to make a case over the past several months for recognizing the musical talents of Jerry Lee Lewis. I have in essence argued that while, for a while, Elvis was clearly `king of the hill' by the time Jerry Lee got rolling he was very well positioned to challenge that role. In the long haul he probably has `won' that distinction but that is the subject for endless, sports-like, controversy. What matters is how he rates in his career against his early performances. I have argued that his 2006 Last Man Standing performances on CD and DVD are the standard by which to judge his later work. I continue to stand by that premise. By that standard this 1989 performance in England comes up short.

In one of the ironies of his very controversial and scandal-filled life Jerry Lee goes back to London in this concert film. The irony, of course, is that it is his obtracization by the British over his marriage to his young cousin that broke the back of a very promising career. A little vignette at the beginning of the concert asking fans and his fellow musicians why they were there puts paid to that long ago silliness. Notwithstanding all the good vibes produced by the show before devoted fans the technical production here of the film itself (the music comes across tinny) and of the meshing among the musicians does not work overall. High School Confidential, Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On and Goodnight, Irene (with Van Morrison), yes. The rest no. If you want to buy one DVD that reflects Jerry Lee when he rocks, is technically well done and has some very nice duos get that above-mentioned Last Man Standing. This, take it or leave it.

Summary: Fun Music
Comment: A older Jerry Lee, but he works very hard and it shows. The video and sound was excellent and I still put this one one when we have friends over. Worth watching, recommend.

Summary: 'The Killer' Keeps Rocking!
Comment: Jerry Lee is shown in concert at the Labatt's Apollo theater in London. He is joined in this short 1989 concert by guests Van Morrison, Dave Edmunds, Dave Davies (The Kinks), John Lodge (Moody Blues) and Brian May (Queen).

I'm partial to this kind of music - old-fashioned rock 'n roll called "Rockabilly" - so this would be pretty hard for me to dislike. (Check out Carl Perkins' Blue Suede Shoes DVD/ concert for the best in rockabilly).

Lewis, around 60 years of age at this concert, still sounded great and was fun to watch. He looks older, of course, with a paunch around his belly, but he's still "The Killer."

He has become a cantankerous old man, from what I've heard, and he shows some of that in this DVD. He just wasn't into it the first few numbers and you could see he wasn't in the best of moods. However, something got his juices flowing and once they did, he was his old rockin' self....and the rest of the way was just outstanding.

This is just great rock 'n roll!!

Summary: Really Great
Comment: I am a new fan of Jerry Lee Lewis, and have been trying to get my hands on anything live because after listening to his music, I realized this is one performer you have to see live. I love piano, I come from a very musical family, and piano was always my favorite. I also love "boogie woogie" music. This show was very exciting and fun to watch. Jerry Lee plays even more of the High School song to give Brian May the chance to play his guitar after he has an "instrument malfunction". He is very kind to the fan who got on the stage. And he seemed to be in some pain in his back. It was pretty easy to see that he was wearing a back brace. His musical talent is prodigious, and he should be the King of Rock, not Elvis. He was trying to keep all the guitarists in control, kind of like a band leader would do, and he does it. It did seem like it took him some time (5 songs) to really warm up. But that is just the way he seems to be.
