Summary: The Music Man on VHS-Don't buy it--Buy the DVD on WS
Comment: This musical "The Music Man" Starring Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, Ron Howard & others has always been one of my all time favorite musical's. I have this VHS film of this movie, which i have had for a long time. It's a Great Musical, but do yourself a favor & buy it now on DVD & make sure you get the one on Widescreen. In my opinion, it makes all the difference in the world as far as Quality goes to be able to have it on Widescreen period. This is definitely true for the Classic Epic Film's.

Summary: so good!
Comment: I remember MUSIC MAN well, from my childhood, when they used to air this on broadcast television, on a regular basis. Particularly, it was one of those annual films you saw around the time of Fourth of July. Robert Preston is the Music Man (the title character), a con artist who comes to the stern midwestern town of River City, promising to start a band for the youth, and bring the community together, through music. Does he really have those intentions? No, but what better way to turn a fast buck? He even pursues the town spinster, librarian Marian Paroo (Shirley Jones). Will this man of music and smoke and mirrors win over the heart of this uptight woman? You'll have to see this film and see how all of the plot twists turn out! What's more, some of Meredith Wilson's best music is featured here (including "Seventy-six Trombones," "Trouble in River City," and "Gary, Indiana"). This film also features a very young Ron Howard (known now as an acclaimed and well-respected director and actor). This is marvelous!

Summary: A Classic Musical
Comment: I must admit the first time I ever watched this version of the "Music Man", I wasn't exactly impressed. The music was great, the acting very good, but still something didn't seem right. After watching the version staring Matthew Broderick on ABC and loved it, I decided to give the original another try. I've come to the conclusion that the film's major flaw is its cinematography. The film never seems to break past being a Broadway show and most of the staging reflects that. Most of the action takes place just as it would on the stage with little creativity. Even with this flaw, the film is still a lot of fun. Robert Preston's Harold Hill, the traveling con man attempting to swindle the town of River City, is a remarkable performance. Herminie Granger and Susan Luckey also put in great performances as Mrs. Shinn, the mayor's wife, and her daughter Zaneeta respectively. Shirley Jones also stars as Marian, the town librarian and music teacher that Hill falls in love with. While the character has so much potential, Jones seems to play her somewhat flat and is also limited by not being able to act and sing at the same time. All in all, though, it's a fun film and recommended to any musical fan.

Summary: The Music Man
Comment: Perhaps the best of the classical musicals on film, The Music Man is wonderful entertainment for the entire family. Children especially love the opening train scene, and its slice of Americana is a gem. The high energy and marvelous melody lift everyone's spirits. Five stars hardly do it justice.
