Editorial Review:
Winner of six Academy Awards(R) including Best Picture, this memorable spirit-lifter about an idealized England that tends its prize-winning roses while confronting the terror of war struck a patriotic chord with American audiences and became 1942's #1 box-office hit. Greer Garson gives a formidable Oscar(R)-winning performance in the title role, comforting children in a bomb shelter, capturing an enemy parachutist and delivering an inspirational portrait of stiff-upper-lip British resolve. When Hitler did his worst, Mrs. Miniver did her best. Year: 1942 Director: William Wyler Starring: Greer Garson, Walter Pidgeon
A movie doesn't win seven Oscars for nothing. A glowing Greer Garson (Best Actress) commands the screen as Mrs. Miniver, a middle-class British housewife whose strength holds her family together as World War II literally hits their home. Walter Pidgeon as her architect husband seems to be the prototype for future TV dads in this affecting portrait of love--familial and romantic--during war. But the relationship between Mrs. Miniver's college-age son (Richard Ney) and the upper-crust Carol (Best Supporting Actress Teresa Wright) is filled with inherent drama--as the war speeds up their young love, it also has the potential to doom it. The 1942 film, which also won for Best Picture and Best Director, is filled with colorful characters, snappy dialogue, and sensational plot twists. Although you spend much of the movie dreading that one of the Minivers will become a casualty of war, when it finally happens, it's not what you anticipated. Exactly what you'd expect from a legendary film that lives up to its billing. --Valerie J. Nelson

Summary: Wonderful Heartfelt Story
Comment: 5 STARS!!! TWO THUMBS WAAAAAAY UP!!! I was not disappointed at all. I watched this movie twice in one day. This movie stands the test of time and will be watched for years to come. It was heartfelt, funny (especially little Toby), sad and some scenes had you on the edge of your seat, it also taught lessons on how important it is to love your family, appreciate them, be thankful for what you have even it's not the biggest house or the fanciest cars, because you never know what may happen today or the next day.

Summary: "Our enemy is no respecter of flower shows."
Comment: As the story opens early in 1939, Mrs. Miniver (Greer Garson) is living a charmed life in a quaint English village. Her husband, Clem (Walter Pigeon), is a successful architect and she has three children she adores. When war is declared, her life is deeply affected: Her eldest son joins the Air Force, Clem is gone for days on boat patrol, and her village is subjected to enemy bombs.

Released in 1942, this movie was a big hit with its patriotic message and wholesome family values. While the Miniver family is somewhat idealized, they nevertheless feel the horror of wartime. It's rousing and sentimental without being overly preachy and won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Garson is beautiful, elegant, and likeable, and Pigeon is a good match as her husband. The supporting cast is lovely, especially Henry Travers as the rose-loving station master.

The DVD extras include two patriotic short films that were made during the war. This is an inspiring, sweet, and timeless story of the effects of war on the home-front. Highly recommended.

Summary: 1 of the best WWII movies made!
Comment: Greer Garson is EXCELLENT in this WWII movie made in England. The trials of having a husband & son serving in the war, while at home having to venture to the bomb shelter with her 2 youngest children. The fears of the children are voiced while the fears of the parents are visible on their faces. This movie touches on faith, seeing the enemy as a person when a hungry German soldier slips into the back door, and the fears of life in the midst of the war. Very few movies encapsulates views from several different characters the way MRS. MINIVER does. You will fall in love with this movie, as I do, each time that you watch it.

Summary: Heartbreaking.
Comment: Mrs. Miniver starring Greer Garson is a tearjerker, just recently watched this film and boy I was very impressed. This film won many Oscars including best picture and best actress. Garson is a pure gem, what a natural and gifted actress she was! She carries this film, her face says it all and who knew Walter Pidgeon was such a looker! Sad but deeply profound, I highly recommend giving this classic a viewing. Enjoy!
