Summary: Once great, now too academic
Comment: The Far Eastern Economic Review used to be a highly useful weekly. The articles in the old weekly provided information on trends in business, life-style, economics, etc. as a mass market news magazine.

But, then, it changed. Instead of business articles -- how one company markets or a regional survey; we get macroeconomic articles. Instead of three page summary of politics, there are thirteen page position papers. Instead of life-style trends among Asians; demographics treatises, instead of color photos and graphs, black & white textbook graphs....

As such the magazine left a market for business people, trend-watchers, and the upper middle class for policy wonks, academics, and economists.

Summary: Top on China - and more...
Comment: I recently moved to Shanghai and discovered the REVIEW. Can't imagine doing without anymore. The articles are really well researched, interesting & easy to read. You can feel the authors are based here and make you understand the region like no other. And I finally find unbiaised reports on China!

I love their new Asia Life section. Colorful, funny & with sometimes really stunning tips only locals would know about. And of course the Traveller's Tales by Nury Vittachi. Always my first read!

Go and get it - you'll see there's no better source on Asia!

Summary: Key source for Asia business
Comment: To me the best source of information regarding Asia. With a good China section I personally find very helpful. I often need to travel to Malaysia, India and China for business - and that magazine really helps me understand how business life works there and what I need to pay attention to when dealing with potential partners. I warmly recommend it!

Summary: THE must read on Asia
Comment: There's simply no other magazine that covers so many political and economical topics on Asia. Clear and digest. The articles are well written and well researched. I read it every week and recommend it to anyone doing business in Asia and especially China. Or simply interested in what's happening there.

Summary: The Only Business Magazine that Covers Asia
Comment: Unbelievable! What a little gem this is. Wall Street Journal (Dow Jones) owns this hard-hitting mag and it is a breath of fresh air if you have any interest in Asia. It is sharp and often has stories weeks or months ahead of the global magazines like Businessweek or Fortune. The reporters are sort of legendary. One had a whole special with Ted Koppel on ABC after getting the scoop of the decade--tracking down the murderous dictator Pol Pot in the jungles of Cambodia. They also devote an entire section to covering China each week. They were the first to say that the outgoing leader Jiang Zemin would really stay on in the background, calling all the shots. And while everyone else was falling in love with China, this magazine had a cover story about the disasterous state of the banks in China.

Their Pakistan and Afghanistan reporter is Ahmed Rashid who wrote the book "Taliban" which is really the definitive take on Afghanistan. He also started warning about the dangers of the Taliban back a few years ago--way before the western press did.

The magazine covers a lot of business stories you'd never find in the Economist or others, and it has a technology and arts & leisure section as well. All of it geared toward telling the world what is really going on in Asia.
