Editorial Review:
Relive the Boston Celtics' sixteenth NBA Championship (still a league record) with this incredible multi-DVD collector's set. Experience the historic 1996 NBA Finals showdown where the Celtics, led by Larry Bird, Robert Parrish and Kevin McHale, battled the upstart Houston Rockets led by Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson. This DVD features all 6 games, each in its entirety and original broadcast format.

Customer Rating: Summary: The Greatest Single-Season NBA Team Ever Comment: This DVD set contains all six games of the 1986 NBA Finals, in which the Boston Celtics defeated the Houston Rockets to claim their sixteenth NBA championship. It also contains the official NBA championship video for 1985-86.
The '86 Celtics, I believe, are the greatest single-season team ever. They won 67 games and rolled to the championship in an era before the league was diluted by expansion, and their strong team play and crisp passing (I've NEVER seen a team that passes the ball like they did) are on full display on this set.
There are only a couple of glitches in this set. The CBS pre-game intros are missing from the first two games--I don't know if there was not room on the DVD for them, or if they were just left off. In Games 3 and 5, the score updates that normally flash at the bottom of the screen following baskets do not display, meaning that you have to try to keep score mentally while watching the games.
I hope that the NBA releases a similar set (without the above glitches) of the 1984 Finals soon! Customer Rating: Summary: The Real Deal Comment: If you love Larry Bird or the Boston Celtics this is a MUST PURCHASE for you. It is HISTORY! I watched this with a big smile on my face...this is an era of great UNSELFISH basketball players. Customer Rating: Summary: Highlight Reel Comment: Having looked forward to the release of this set it was a pleasure to get it home and pop the first disc into the DVD player. The games are presented more or less as they appeared on the television broadcasts at the time and if you're a Celtics fan or basketball fan in general you will no doubt enjoy seeing these games. It's great to see plays that ended up in those all time Larry Bird highlight reels within the context of the game. Customer Rating: Summary: Missing Game 5 fight Comment: First let me say the set is great but it is not complete and unedited. The only reason to watch Game 5 was the fight in which
Ralph Sampson and Jerry Sichting went at it. Unfortuantley it has been
edited out. I know the NBA doesn't want to promote violence but the
fight was a major part of an otherwise unexciting series. It should
have been included. Otherwise the set is great.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Best Team Ever? Comment: In my opinion, that is a very subjective yes, they were the best team Ive ever seen, although I didnt start watching the NBA until 1980, so any team before that I cant really say. Everyone is going to have a different opinion on this. Im sure many will say the 95-96 Bulls and they were a great team, but I have never seen a team play so well as a team as the Celtics of 85-86. Larry Bird, never graced with much athleticism, was at his very best at this point in his career, able to control the game from the point forward position, had an uncanny ability to change the arc on his shots, could shoot left handed and while not a good one on one defender, was an exceptional team defender.
This team was loaded with unconventional players. Ive never seen a player like Bird or McHale, who was virtually unstoppable and some of the very best low post moves Ive seen. He also had two very long arms and had great timing on his shot blocking.
I could literally go on and on about this team, but suffice to say this is a great dvd treatment of that team and their championship series against Houston. If you like the Celtics that are winning right now, do yourself a favor and check out the last C's team to win it all. They were a special team.
