Editorial Review:
Ash, Pikachu and their Pokémon friends give their all as they battle their way across the Battle Frontier! Will Ash win the ultimate prize and become a Frontier Brain? May has her own challenges to overcome when she goes up against her most determined rivals in the Grand Festival. But Ash and May's toughest battle of all may be--against each other?! The more entertaining second half of the Battle Frontier storyline focuses less exclusively on Ash and includes more adventures for May, Max and even Brock. May competes for the Ribbon Cup, the ultimate award in Pokémon Contests, a combination of battle moves and performance routines, but places second. Ash wins the remaining Frontier "symbols" (rather than badges), and eventually takes on Brandon, the reigning champion. But his eventual victory in the Battle Pyramid is the toughest of his career. The elaborate special effects in several episodes give them the feel of mini-features. In the two-part "Deoxys' Crisis," Max and Meowth enter the consciousness and memories of a Pokémon from outer space. "Battling the Enemy Within" boasts a number of Spielberg-esque touches as the gang wanders through the booby-trapped ruins of a vast complex built by the last king of Pokélantis. Ash learns an important lesson about the importance of friendship and the dangers of overweening ambition. These dramatic moments are balanced with the slapstick villainy of Team Rocket's efforts to steal Pikachu and other Pokémon to win their boss's favor. The series ends on a more somber note as the members of the quartet split up and head for their respective homes. A second pal--the rather obnoxious Aipom--joins Ash and Pikachu as they set out for the Sinnoh region with its promise of new battles and new Pokémon: those adventures are chronicled in the Diamond and Pearl story arc.
